Yelewata (also spelled Yelwata) elders in Benue State have apologised to Peter Obi and invited him to visit the community after his convoy was blocked during an attempted visit.
This follows an incident on or around 8–9 September 2026. Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), travelled to Benue intending to visit Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area to condole with victims and families of a June 13–14, 2025 massacre (reports cite over 270 killed, with a memorial wall noting around 271). His convoy was stopped near the Makurdi airport/Makurdi-Gboko road by youths chanting for him to “go back.” Obi described the visit as humanitarian, not political, and expressed concern over the obstruction.
The Benue State Government (under Governor Hyacinth Alia) denied involvement, saying it was not formally notified of the visit and rejecting claims that state-linked thugs or an aide were responsible. Critics, including former Governor Samuel Ortom and others, condemned the blockade as undemocratic.
In a Channels Television report (published around 11–12 September 2026), elders and victims gathered at the memorial wall for the victims. Speaking on behalf of the United Council of Elders, they:
- Apologised for the harassment, embarrassment, and inconvenience caused to Obi and his delegation.
- Appreciated his decision to visit out of empathy and compassion and stand with the community in grief.
- Criticised the mobilisation of people to stop him and the state government’s explanation.
- Highlighted ongoing hardship: more than a year after the massacre, many remain affected, with claims of limited support (one speaker referenced hunger and lack of individual aid for over five months).
- Called on the government for a clear, transparent account of reconstruction efforts and donations received from individuals, local, and international organisations.
- Offered a fresh invitation for Obi to visit, identify with the displaced persons, and expressed hope he would accept as they prepared to welcome him.
