The image of a person saying, “I fasted for 40 days,” creates an obvious medical question that is rarely asked:
What was that person actually doing during those 40 days?
Were they walking around, working, travelling and conducting ordinary business—or were they largely sitting, meditating, praying and conserving energy?
The distinction matters enormously.
Modern medicine shows that the human body can adapt remarkably to prolonged absence of food. But surviving without food is not the same thing as functioning normally without food.
And the biblical accounts of Jesus, Moses and Elijah should not automatically be treated as medical experiments that ordinary people can reproduce.
1. The first surprise: the body does not immediately “run out of fuel”
When food stops coming in, the body changes its fuel system.
Initially, the liver uses stored glycogen to help maintain blood glucose. As fasting continues, glycogen becomes depleted and the body increasingly mobilizes fat. The liver converts fatty acids into ketone bodies, which become an increasingly important fuel for the brain and other tissues.
This is one reason a human being can survive considerably longer without food than most people imagine.
But there is another side to the story.
The body isn’t producing energy from nowhere.
It is consuming its own stored resources.
And prolonged fasting can involve loss of lean mass as well as fat. A review of human prolonged-fasting trials found that approximately two-thirds of weight lost during 5–20-day fasting protocols was lean mass and one-third fat mass.
So the question isn’t simply:
“Can a human survive without food?”
The much more important question is:
“What does the human body have to sacrifice in order to keep functioning?”

2. Ten famous or documented examples—and what they actually tell us
These examples are often lumped together as though they represent the same phenomenon. They don’t.

The critical point is that very few of these examples demonstrate a person eating nothing while simultaneously maintaining a normal, physically demanding lifestyle.
That is the part popular accounts frequently leave out.
3. David Blaine is perhaps the clearest modern example
David Blaine’s famous 44-day fast is often remembered simply as:
“He survived 44 days without food.”
But that description hides an enormous qualification.
He wasn’t spending those 44 days living like an ordinary working person.
He was placed in an environment where his physical activity was extremely restricted.
That is almost the opposite of demonstrating that a person can eat nothing for six weeks and continue an ordinary active lifestyle.
His experience actually illustrates an important physiological principle:
The less energy you spend, the easier it is to conserve your remaining energy reserves.
Sitting, lying down and meditating require dramatically less energy than construction work, farming, running, travelling or playing sport.

4. What about people who sit and meditate?
This is where many traditional fasting practices become easier to understand.
A person sitting quietly in meditation is still metabolically active—but their energy expenditure is dramatically lower than someone running around all day.
This doesn’t mean meditation somehow creates calories.
It means the body is being asked to perform less physical work.
The same principle applies to someone who spends a prolonged fast praying, reading, contemplating or sleeping.
They may be genuinely fasting.
But they aren’t necessarily demonstrating that the human body can maintain normal physical performance without food.
5. The remarkable case of the 10-day fast
There is actually an interesting scientific case that comes very close to the question you asked.
Researchers studied a man who went 10 days without caloric food, while he had access to water and non-caloric tea. His metabolic and psychological condition was monitored.
His body entered a fasting state, ketones increased and fat metabolism increased.
But there was an important finding:
His ability to exercise was reduced.
The investigators did not find that he suddenly became incapable of functioning, but his physical exercise capacity declined.
That is very different from saying:
“After ten days without food, you can live normally and exercise normally.”
6. So could someone physically survive 10 days without food?
Some people can survive that period.
That is not the same as saying it is safe for everyone.
Modern studies of prolonged fasting have examined fasting periods of several days to several weeks, but these studies generally involve carefully selected adults and varying degrees of medical supervision. Reported problems include headaches, insomnia, hunger and metabolic disturbances.
A medical chart review of 768 medically supervised water-only fasting visits found that most adverse events were mild to moderate, but some participants experienced more serious events.
And there is an additional danger that people often forget:
The return to eating.
After prolonged food deprivation, rapidly returning to food can cause dangerous shifts in electrolytes—a condition known as refeeding syndrome.
A published case of a woman undertaking a 40-day water-only religious fast documented low sodium and subsequent abnormalities involving potassium, phosphate and magnesium during refeeding.
Therefore, the dramatic question isn’t merely:
“Can someone survive the fast?”
It is also:
“Can the person safely transition back to eating?”
7. What happens to physical activity?
This is perhaps the most interesting part of the investigation.
The body becomes increasingly economical.
During prolonged food deprivation:
Food disappears → insulin falls → fat mobilization increases → ketones rise → the body attempts to preserve vital organs and conserve protein.
The body therefore becomes increasingly dependent on stored fat and ketones.
But energy conservation has consequences.
A fasting person may experience:
- reduced energy
- weakness
- dizziness
- impaired exercise capacity
- changes in blood pressure
- headaches
- sleep disturbances
- loss of lean tissue
- electrolyte abnormalities
So someone can be conscious, capable of talking and even capable of walking, while nevertheless being physiologically impaired compared with their normal fed state.
8. What about athletes?
This provides an excellent comparison.
Muslim athletes sometimes train and compete during Ramadan.
But Ramadan fasting is fundamentally different from a 10-day water-only fast.
During Ramadan, the person generally eats and drinks every night.
Research shows that athletes can continue training during Ramadan, although fatigue, sleep disruption, hydration and high-intensity performance can become issues.
That demonstrates something important:
Humans can perform physical activity while fasting for part of the day.
It does not demonstrate that humans can maintain the same performance while consuming nothing for ten consecutive days.
Those are two very different physiological situations.
9. Now the extraordinary question: What was Jesus doing?
The biblical account is fascinating precisely because it doesn’t tell us everything modern readers want to know.
Matthew says Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and fasted for forty days and forty nights.
Luke provides an even stronger statement:
“He ate nothing during those days.”
At the end, Luke says:
“he was hungry.”
The accounts then concentrate on His temptation by Satan.
But notice what Scripture doesn’t say.
It doesn’t give us a 40-day schedule.
It doesn’t tell us:
- how many kilometres Jesus walked each day
- whether He exercised
- how much He slept
- how much water He drank
- whether He sat for hours
- whether He spent the entire period praying
- what His heart rate was
- what His blood chemistry was
- what His body weight was
Therefore, it would be scientifically irresponsible to reconstruct a detailed medical protocol from the biblical account.
10. Jesus was not performing a modern “water-fasting experiment”
This distinction is crucial.
The Gospel presents Jesus’ forty days as a spiritual event, not a nutrition experiment.
He was:
led by the Spirit → into the wilderness → fasting → being tempted → relying upon God.
The central issue of the story is therefore not:
“How can I reproduce Jesus’ metabolism?”
It is:
“What does dependence upon God mean when physical appetite, power and temptation are stripped away?”
Jesus responds to temptation by emphasizing God’s word rather than satisfying hunger or using divine power for Himself.
That is the theological heart of the story.
11. Moses and Elijah are equally extraordinary
Moses is described as fasting for forty days and forty nights when receiving the Law.
Elijah is described as travelling after receiving supernatural nourishment and then journeying for forty days toward Horeb.
These are religious narratives, not controlled clinical trials.
The Bible itself repeatedly contains extraordinary events that aren’t presented as instructions for ordinary human physiology.
Consequently, saying:
“Jesus fasted 40 days, therefore I should be able to do 40 days”
is a logical mistake.
It confuses description with prescription.
12. The great misconception about fasting
There is a tendency to imagine fasting as:
No food + willpower = spiritual strength.
But biologically it is much more complicated.
The body is continuously making decisions about:
- glucose
- fat
- ketones
- protein
- electrolytes
- hormones
- blood pressure
- hydration
- muscle preservation
- brain fuel
And those systems don’t respond identically in every person.
A person with substantial energy reserves, for example, may respond very differently from a person who is already undernourished.
Someone with diabetes, kidney disease, an eating disorder, certain medications or other medical conditions may face substantially greater risks.
13. The biggest distinction: fasting versus starvation
There is an uncomfortable scientific boundary here.
A short religious fast may be described as fasting.
But once food deprivation becomes prolonged, physiology increasingly resembles starvation adaptation.
One recent review describes prolonged starvation as a state in which the body progressively changes its hormonal and metabolic systems, increasing fat utilization, ketogenesis and protein conservation.
The word starvation sounds dramatic.
But physiologically, the body doesn’t care whether the absence of calories resulted from:
religion, dieting, imprisonment, hunger, illness or lack of food.
It responds to the energy deficit.
14. So could somebody be “active” for ten days?
Here we need to define active.
Sitting, talking and praying?
Potentially, depending on the person.
Walking around occasionally?
Some people undergoing prolonged fasting can do so.
Working a desk job?
Some may remain capable of it, although they may experience fatigue or impaired concentration.
Heavy physical labour?
A completely different proposition.
Running, intensive exercise or competitive sport?
Not something that should be assumed to remain safe or normal during prolonged food deprivation.
Scientific evidence indicates that prolonged fasting can reduce physical capacity, while fasting research in athletes shows that maintaining high-intensity performance during fasting presents additional challenges.
15. The fascinating conclusion
The human body is far more adaptable than we normally appreciate.
It can change its fuel source.
It can use glycogen.
Then fat.
Then ketones.
It can reduce energy expenditure.
It can conserve protein.
And under extraordinary circumstances, humans have survived extraordinarily long periods without food.
But that doesn’t mean the human body is thriving.
And it certainly doesn’t mean that a person should imitate historical fasting records.
The evidence actually gives us a much more interesting picture:
The body can survive by becoming increasingly economical.
That explains why the famous fasting figures who spent prolonged periods sitting, isolated, meditating, suspended, praying or otherwise limiting their activity are not really contradictory to medical science.
In many cases, their inactivity was probably part of what made prolonged fasting physically possible.
And that brings us back to Jesus
The Bible doesn’t portray Jesus’ forty days as an athletic challenge.
It portrays them as a wilderness encounter.
Luke says Jesus was “full of the Holy Spirit,” went into the wilderness, ate nothing for forty days, became hungry, and then faced temptation.
The extraordinary thing about the story isn’t that Jesus discovered a clever way to avoid calories.
It is that hunger did not become His master.
His physical hunger became the setting in which a deeper question was tested:
What sustains a human being when ordinary sources of security are removed?
Jesus’ answer was spiritual rather than nutritional.
And that may be the most important distinction between biblical fasting and the modern fascination with extreme fasting records.
Medical caution
Because prolonged food deprivation can cause weakness, electrolyte disturbances, loss of lean tissue and potentially dangerous complications during refeeding, a 10-day water-only fast should not be treated as a do-it-yourself experiment—particularly for a teenager or anyone with a medical condition. The scientific literature on prolonged fasting involves carefully selected populations and, in many cases, medical supervision.
For a young person, the safer way to explore the spiritual purpose of fasting is to discuss an age-appropriate practice with a parent/guardian and a healthcare professional rather than attempting prolonged food deprivation.
