Concerned Parents of the Federal Government Girls’ College Owerri (FGGCO) have called on the Federal Ministry of Education and the supervising authorities of unity schools to urgently intervene and investigate the alleged disruptive policy of the new Principal/Director, Mrs Ozoemena Gladys Onyeguiri, of the Federal Government Girls’ College Owerri, Imo State since her assumption of office.
They accused the Principal of
staff victimisation, punitive transfers, financial charges on students and that if these are left unchecked, may adversely affect the reputation, discipline, welfare, and smooth administration of the institution.
In a petition to the federal government and supervising authorities of the Federal Government Colleges, signed by Mrs Clara Ijeoma Ihejirika, a concerned parent, and made available to Daily Sun, called on the federal government to urgently interven over alleged “disruptive policy of the principal of FGGCO, which is causing ripples among staff members, parents, and students.
Mrs Ihejirika said: ”I write as a parent of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Owerri, to draw the attention of the public and, more importantly, the appropriate authorities to developments in the school which, if left unchecked, may adversely affect the reputation, discipline, welfare, and smooth administration of the institution”.
Continuing, she said: “Within approximately four months of the new Principal’s assumption of office, the following members of staff were reportedly transferred: Mrs Ogueri: VP, Student Affairs 1; Mrs Ejelonu: VP, Student Affairs 11; Chief Stella Orji: VP, Academics 1; and Mrs Okoro Ebere: Head of Subject, Social Studies. These transfers were reportedly affected on August 2, 2026. In addition, Dr Mrs Okanne, Assistant Director, was reportedly transferred on August 20, 2026.
The concern requiring investigation is whether the transfers were made in accordance with the Federal Ministry of Education procedures, or whether any of them amounted to punitive or retaliatory transfers.
“Termination of the services of a part-time mathematics teacher, charges of N2, 000.00 imposed on outgoing SS3 students, fine of 10,000 imposed on students for organising bonfire night after their final exams allegedly for damages to school properties, which the principal could not provide evidence when parents requested to see the damages.
The parents, Mrs Ihejirika said, want the federal government and the supervising authorities of the Federal Government Colleges to investigate all fees, surcharges, and other financial collections imposed on students, including the SS3 clearance charges.
“We request proper records, approvals, receipts, and accountability for all such collections, examine the disciplinary procedures used against students involved in the reported incidents, ensure that students are not subjected to arbitrary or disproportionate financial penalties, investigate allegations of improper influence or claims of using officials within the ministry to effect personnel decisions, and provide an avenue through which staff, students, and parents can confidentially report concerns without fear of victimisation”, she said.
