During the Osun State governorship election on or around 15 August 2026, Afrobeats star David Adeleke (Davido) actively monitored results and posted updates on X (formerly Twitter). He supported his uncle, incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. As results were collated, Davido claimed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had been uploading polling-unit results regularly before a prolonged pause. He alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio contacted the collation centre in an attempt to halt the process and posted about it, including statements accusing Akpabio of interference.
According to Davido’s account in a subsequent interview with News Central Television on 18 August 2026, he received calls from high-profile figures urging him to delete the posts. He said Akpabio (whom he described as being “like my godfather”) reached out, as did billionaire Aliko Dangote (“Uncle Aliko”). Davido stated that he refused both requests.
His reported responses included:
- To those contacting him about the Akpabio-related posts: “Sorry o. You guys have literally just gone against my uncle… I can’t delete anything.”
- To Dangote: “Uncle, I’m not deleting until the INEC announcement.”
He maintained that he would only consider removing the content after the official declaration by INEC.
Davido also alleged large-scale vote-buying efforts (claiming opponents brought in substantial cash, which he later quantified in the hundreds of billions of naira) and described ordinary Osun residents confronting people trying to seize ballot materials. He emphasised that his side did not spend money on election day.
INEC later declared Ademola Adeleke the winner. Reports put the final tally at roughly 511,067 votes for Adeleke against about 444,815 for the All Progressives Congress candidate. Davido framed the outcome as proof that popular will could overcome financial and political pressure, and he urged his uncle to serve as an example to other governors.
The claims come solely from Davido’s interview and have been widely reported across Nigerian media outlets. Neither Akpabio nor Dangote has been quoted in the available coverage offering a public response at the time of these reports.
