Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has officially inaugurated the newly reconstructed 19.79-kilometre Buguma–Degema–Abonnema Road, marking a historic milestone in the infrastructural development of the state. The critical transport corridor serves as a vital artery connecting the three major local government areas that constitute the historic Kalabari Kingdom: Asari-Toru, Degema, and Akuku-Toru.
Speaking at the colorful inauguration ceremony, Governor Fubara expressed immense joy at the successful completion of the project. He emphasized that the reconstruction of this strategic highway has effectively brought an end to years of harrowing travel experiences, persistent traffic delays, and security challenges that local commuters and traders previously endured daily.
Connecting the Kalabari Kingdom
For years, the Buguma–Degema–Abonnema Road was plagued by deterioration, causing severe economic drawbacks for the riverine communities. By restoring this road, Governor Fubara’s administration has not only enhanced physical connectivity but has also revitalized local commerce, facilitating the seamless movement of goods, services, and people across the Kalabari region.
“This project is not just about asphalt and concrete; it is about bringing our people closer together, securing their journeys, and opening up new economic opportunities for the Kalabari Kingdom,” the Governor stated during his address.
Deep Appreciation for the Kalabari People
Beyond the infrastructural achievement, Governor Fubara used the platform to extend his deep gratitude to the chiefs, elders, youth, and the entire citizenry of the Kalabari Kingdom for their unwavering support. He commended them for maintaining peace and standing firmly by his administration amidst political transitions, promising that his government would continue to prioritize projects that directly impact the lives of the populace.
He assured the people that the completion of the Buguma–Degema–Abonnema Road is just one of many developmental initiatives planned for the area. The administration remains committed to distributing democratic dividends equitably across all parts of Rivers State, ensuring that no region is left behind in its developmental blueprint.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and enthusiastic residents who celebrated the project as a monumental relief and a catalyst for future growth in the region.
