Former members of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) have demanded for the presidential slot of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2031.
The former ANPP members said their demand was based on what they described as the need for fairness and equity among the legacy political blocs that formed the APC, noting that the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, bloc produced former President Muhammadu Buhari for two terms, while the presidency is currently being occupied by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who emerged from the former ACN bloc.
The position was made known in a communiqué issued on Monday, September 7, 2026, after a meeting of former ANPP members in Abuja..
The former members said having supported the formation of the APC and remained part of the party’s political structure, the former ANPP bloc should be considered for the presidency when Tinubu’s tenure ends in 2031.
They also called on President Tinubu to increase the representation of former ANPP members in his administration through appointments into strategic government positions.
The former ANPP members also insisted that the vice-presidential position should remain with their bloc, describing the ANPP as the second-largest contributor to the formation of the APC and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for what they described as positive responses to some of the demands it presented during its November 3, 2025 meeting.
While commending the President for retaining Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, they cited the appointment of Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari as director-general of Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council and the appointment of Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, as deputy director 1, North, as evidence of the President’s recognition of members of the bloc.
