The Nigeria Police Force says its tactical personnel have foiled an attack on the convoy of Borno State APC governorship candidate Mustapha Gubio and other political figures.

The incident occurred on Thursday along the Kareto-Damasak road in Borno State when suspected terrorists attacked the convoy.

According to the police, the attackers deployed improvised explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades during the assault, prompting security operatives to engage them.

The tactical team successfully pushed the attackers into the surrounding bush and subsequently searched the area for possible secondary explosives.

“The tactical team pushed the terrorists back into the surrounding bush and later searched and secured the immediate area to eliminate secondary explosive threats,” the police said.

The force added that the convoy, which included the governorship candidate, government officials and other political stakeholders, was safely evacuated from the area.

No casualties were recorded among those travelling in the convoy, according to the police.

The latest incident comes years after another attack targeted the convoy of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.

In 2020, suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters reportedly targeted Zulum’s convoy with a donkey carrying explosives

Zulum was on his way back to Maiduguri, the state capital, from Baga when his convoy came under attack.
