Nigerians must put aside ethnic and religious sentiments and vote based on competence, character and track record in the 2027 general elections, according to lawyer, strategic advisor and civic advocate Ivie Omoregie.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Omoregie said Nigerians should focus on candidates’ ability to deliver, particularly given the economic difficulties confronting the country.
She questioned the practice of voting along religious and ethnic lines, arguing that the country could have experienced a different trajectory if Nigerians had consistently prioritised individual competence and character when choosing their leaders.
“I think Nigerians should put aside any kind of ethnic sentiment or religious sentiment and focus solely on competence and track record and the ability to deliver in such harsh conditions.”
Omoregie also challenged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for the quality of leadership they elect, saying the country’s challenges extend beyond the actions of its government.
She stated that ethnic and religious sentiments remain among the easiest ways politicians manipulate voters, particularly where citizens are not sufficiently aware of the psychological and sociological factors influencing their decisions.
According to her, politicians who cannot deliver on their promises sometimes deliberately exploit these sentiments for personal gain.
Omoregie also questioned the level of accountability for public officials accused of misconduct, noting that some politicians facing corruption cases continue to seek elective positions.
She criticised the lack of consequences for misconduct, saying the absence of meaningful repercussions has contributed to the persistence of corruption in public office.
“The fact is, we have no repercussions for misconduct.”
The civic advocate said Nigeria’s accountability problem extends beyond government, comparing it to challenges businesses face when employees deliberately undermine organisations for personal gain.
She emphasized that Nigerians must recognise their responsibility in choosing and retaining leaders.
“We all need to know that we are accountable for the leaders that we have in place.”
Omoregie therefore urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 elections with greater awareness and make decisions based on candidates’ competence, character and demonstrated ability to deliver, rather than ethnic, religious or personality considerations.
