Unlike vigilante revenge-killings by individuals, high-profile violence inside or directly around Nigerian courtrooms typically takes the form of brazen, armed commando-style raids by criminal gangs looking to break out their bosses, or targeted assassinations related to regional conflicts.         These notable incidents occurred inside or around Nigerian courtrooms:
        1. The Owerri High Court Commando Raid (2017)
          • The Incident: A notorious kidnapping kingpin and gang leader, Henry Chibueze (alias “Vampire”), was brought to the Owerri High Court in Imo State along with dozens of other inmates for a scheduled trial. Just as they entered the court premises, an armed group numbering over six stormed the courtroom. They opened fire indiscriminately using sophisticated weapons. [1]
          • The Fatalities: Six people were killed on the spot, including two prison wardens who were guarding the suspects. Judges, lawyers, and litigants were forced to scale fences to escape the gunfire. “Vampire” was successfully freed by his gang but was later tracked down and killed by the police weeks later. [1, 2]

        2. The Ejemekwuru Customary Court Assassination (2023)
          • The Incident: His Worship Nnaemeka Ugboma, the serving President (Judge) of the Ejemekwuru Customary Court in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, was actively presiding over a court session. Multiple gunmen arrived on a motorcycle, walked directly into the active courtroom, and dragged the judge outside into the open. [1, 2]
          • The Fatalities: The gunmen shot Judge Ugboma dead right in front of the court complex before speeding away, leaving the body on the floor as lawyers, staff, and litigants fled in panic.         3. The Rivers State Judiciary Complex Attack (2016)
        • The Incident: Gunmen staged a violent assault at the High Court complex in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The attack was heavily politicized, timed to coincide with a highly controversial murder trial involving a former local government chairman. [1]
        • The Fatalities: Two security personnel were shot and killed within the court premises. The attack completely paralyzed judicial activities in the state capital, with authorities later stating the perpetrators’ intent was to violently force the permanent closure of the courts
      • Jitendra Gogi (2021) — Delhi
        Gogi was a notorious Delhi gangster who was in custody and appearing before a judge at the Rohini Court complex. Two gunmen from a rival gang disguised themselves in black lawyers’ robes to bypass security with concealed weapons. Once inside the courtroom, they opened fire and hit Gogi multiple times, killing him on the spot before police security personnel shot and killed both attackers.

      • Bharat Kalicharan alias “Akku” Yadav (2004) — Nagpur

      • Yadav was a brutal serial rapist, extortionist, and murderer who terrorized a local community with impunity for a decade due to police negligence. During a hearing at the Nagpur District Court, an angry mob of around 200 local women stormed the courtroom. They blindsided security by throwing chili powder into Yadav’s eyes, then stabbed him more than 70 times and lynched him to death right in front of the judge.

      • Sanjeev Maheshwari alias “Jeeva” (2023) — Lucknow
        Jeeva was a high-profile gangster and close aide to politician Mukhtar Ansari, facing more than 20 criminal charges. He was brought to a Lucknow courtroom for a hearing when a shooter, also disguised as a lawyer, opened fire inside the room. Jeeva was shot multiple times and bled to death on the courtroom floor.

    In Germany, courtroom attacks have historically been driven by highly personal, emotional vendettas or explosive reactions to a judge’s ruling.
    • Klaus Grabowski (1981) — Lübeck
      Grabowski was a convicted sex offender on trial for the abduction and murder of a seven-year-old girl named Anna. On the third day of the trial at the Lübeck District Court, the victim’s mother, Marianne Bachmeier, smuggled a Beretta pistol into the courtroom in her purse. She walked up behind Grabowski and fired seven shots into his back, killing him instantly in what became Europe’s most famous modern case of vigilante justice.

    • Dachau Courtroom Shooter (2012) — Dachau
      A 54-year-old German businessman was on trial at the Dachau District Court for failing to pay employee health insurance contributions. Just as the judge was preparing to announce the verdict, the defendant pulled out a smuggled handgun. Instead of attempting escape, he immediately opened fire inside the courtroom, targeting the legal staff. He shot a 31-year-old state prosecutor three times, fatally wounding him before being tackled by police
  • Slobodan Praljak (2017): A convicted war criminal who drank poison in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) immediately after his sentence was upheld.
  • Marvin “Buck” Walker (1983): Shot and killed by a judge in a Georgia courtroom after pulling a gun during a hearing.
