The member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Leke Abejide, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a prolonged leadership crisis within the party.
Abejide described his decision as both “painful and inevitable,” saying the internal instability made it impossible for him to remain in the party.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the lawmaker said his resignation was necessary to protect his political future and ensure effective representation for his constituents in Yagba Federal Constituency, Kogi State.
He disclosed plans to align with a “mainstream political party” but did not reveal the platform he intends to join.
Until recently, Abejide served as the National Leader of the ADC. He alleged that the party was unlawfully hijacked about nine months ago by individuals he described as politicians expelled from other parties due to their inability to manage internal affairs.
According to him, the crisis forced him to seek legal redress at the Federal High Court to assert his constitutional right to freedom of association.
“The instability within the party created uncertainty and undermined the founding vision of the ADC,” he said.
Reflecting on his contributions to the party, Abejide said he played a major role in building the ADC into a nationally recognised political platform with representation in both the National and State Assemblies.
He also disclosed that he provided significant financial support to sustain the party over the years.
Abejide formally relinquished his leadership role, handing over to the current National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, whom he wished success in his ongoing legal battles.
He accused what he termed “party hijackers” of derailing the ADC’s founding objective of becoming a credible and nationally respected political platform.
Addressing claims of his alleged expulsion from the party, Abejide dismissed the reports, insisting that his exit was voluntary.
“My fellow Nigerians, particularly my loyal supporters in Yagba Federal Constituency, Kogi State, and across the country and diaspora, it has become necessary to address the lingering crisis within my former party, the ADC,” he said.
“After extensive consultations with political leaders, constituents, and stakeholders who share my vision aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I have resolved to chart a new political course.
“Despite recent claims that I was expelled on April 14, I wish to state categorically that I voluntarily withdrew my membership from the ADC in accordance with constitutional provisions.”
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to his constituents and national development, stating that his next political move would be guided by the pursuit of better governance outcomes and meaningful democratic progress in Nigeria.
