During the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (1985–1993), ₦300,000 was an absolute fortune worth tens of thousands of US dollars, whereas today that same nominal amount is worth less than $200 USD.
Exchange Rate and Dollar Value Under Babangida (1985–1993)
When Babangida took power in 1985, the Nigerian Naira was still stronger than or nearly on par with the US Dollar. Following the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) and the Second-tier Foreign Exchange Market (SFEM) in 1986, the Naira began its historic depreciation, but its value remained remarkably high compared to today:
  • 1985: The exchange rate was roughly $1 = ₦0.89. ₦300,000 was equivalent to about $337,000 USD.
  • 1990: The exchange rate dropped to roughly $1 = ₦7.39. ₦300,000 was still worth about $40,600 USD.
  • 1993 (End of IBB’s tenure): The exchange rate closed around $1 = ₦17.30 (official). ₦300,000 was worth roughly $17,300 USD.
(Note: This explains why IBB noted in later interviews that sacking a governor over the misappropriation of ₦300,000 was treated as a massive, career-ending financial crime at the time).
Comparison to Today in Nigeria
  • Today’s Value: With exchange rates fluctuating around ₦1,500 to ₦1,600 per US dollar, ₦300,000 today equals roughly $180 to $200 USD.
  • Purchasing Power: Due to decades of compounding inflation and steep currency devaluation, ₦300,000 in the late 1980s could buy real estate, brand-new cars, or fund massive multi-year projects, whereas today ₦300,000 barely covers basic monthly household groceries or a short-term utility bill.
