“Most Governors Seeking Re-Election Will Be Disappointed In 2027” — Kwankwaso Blames Poor Governance, Says Voters Will Ultimately Decide Their Fate

Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has predicted that governors seeking re-election in 2027 while relying on manipulation of the electoral process or the influence of state structures will be disappointed at the polls.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, spoke on Sunday in Abuja during the News Agency of Nigeria Personality Interview Series, where he assessed the political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general election.
He argued that some governors who had failed to address the concerns of their people were defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress in the belief that membership of the party would give them an electoral advantage.
According to him, such politicians may discover that party affiliation alone cannot guarantee victory because Nigerians are becoming increasingly conscious of their political choices and willing to judge officeholders on their performance.
“What I foresee in the 2027 elections is that most of the governors seeking re-election will be disappointed because people will not support them,” Kwankwaso said.
He maintained that public dissatisfaction with governments at both federal and state levels had been fuelled by insecurity, poverty, unemployment and what he described as deteriorating public services.
Kwankwaso said citizens had genuine reasons to demand better governance, pointing to the large number of children who remain out of school and the effect of insecurity on communities across the country.
He argued that governors and other politicians seeking another term should not assume that control of government machinery or movement into the ruling party would automatically translate into electoral support.
The former Kano governor criticised what he described as the increasing movement of politicians from different parties into the APC in search of political advantage ahead of 2027.
He suggested that some of the defectors were seeking political protection or expecting the ruling party to “perform magic” on their behalf at the polls despite dissatisfaction with their performance in office.
Kwankwaso, however, expressed confidence that voters would ultimately determine the outcome of the elections.
Recalling his tenure as governor of Kano State, he said his administration prioritised education by expanding access to primary, secondary and tertiary education for qualified residents.
He also said his government introduced measures aimed at addressing the Almajiri challenge and invested in educational infrastructure, including the provision of hostels for students.
According to him, those programmes demonstrated that governments could significantly improve the lives of citizens where leaders properly identified priorities and effectively deployed available resources.
Kwankwaso maintained that Nigerians were becoming less willing to support politicians simply because of their positions or political connections and would increasingly demand evidence of performance.
He urged political leaders to listen to citizens and recognise the demand for change where governments had failed to meet public expectations.
